Recreation Program
General
Our recreation program is designed to improve the boys’ physical and interaction skills, improve their self-esteem, and teach them about the wide range of recreational options available to them.
Boys entering the St. Mary’s program generally have a very low self-image and have avoided recreational activities throughout their lives. Low skill levels and general lack of interest are common. St. Mary’s aims to make recreation fun, and provides many recreational opportunities for the boys.
Purpose
St. Mary’s recreation program emphasizes commitment, cooperation, and sportsmanship. The activities give the boys experience in competition and teach them appropriate ways to spend leisure time.
Recreation is a valuable component of each boy’s developmental process at St. Mary’s.
Recreation improves self-confidence and gives a boy an appropriate outlet for his energies. The more knowledge and success he experiences in recreation, the more likely he is to use it in the future.
St. Mary’s recreation program gives him that experience.
Physical Education
Our physical education program is designed to:
- improve game skills and coordination
- teach rules and strategies of group sports
- improve general physical fitness
- improve interaction among peers in the group setting
Residents are taught to take pride in their effort and their physical well-being.
Leisure Time
Our leisure time program is designed to give the boys appropriate recreational options for their free time. Summer sports camps, on-campus team sports, recreation room facilities, outings, and individual activities complete the leisure time program.
